What can you say after a game like Duke had against Notre Dame but: wow.

The numbers, the history…it’s all staggering. This was the worst loss for Notre Dame in over 100 years….128 to be exact. Think about that for a minute. The only worse loss Notre Dame has ever suffered was in the freaking 19th century.

It’s totally fair to say that it might have been different if Jalen Haralson and Markus Burton had played. Burton is a really talented guard and Haralson has been highly impressive as a freshman. We don’t see any way they would have won, mind you, but it might not have been as bad as it turned out to be.

Here’s another crazy stat: Jon Scheyer is now the only ACC coach to have ever won a conference road game by more than 40 points – and he’s done it twice. The first time was at Georgia Tech in 2023. Mike Krzyzewski didn’t do it. Dean Smith didn’t do it. Vic Bubas, Frank McGuire, Lefty Driesell – none of them did this.

As for Boozer, he finished with 24 points, 13 rebounds, and 2 assists. He shot 63% and hit 2-2 on three-point attempts. However, he only took 8 shots and hit 5 of those…but Notre Dame put him on the line a lot: he hit 12-14 of his free throws.

He also had no turnovers.

And Boozer nearly outscored and outrebounded the Irish in the first half by himself.

Duke’s defense has been really good for most of the season. A better word is probably elite. It’s just been scary good. The offense has been up and down. Well, on Tuesday it, too, was elite. It’s hard to measure the ball movement outside of analytics, but it was gorgeous. There are a lot of factors involved, but one of them is the maturation of Caleb Foster, who has become a really solid leader for Duke.

Odds are the win at Notre Dame, while historic, is an aberration. There will still be games where Duke just has to grind it out.

That said, wins like this don’t happen very often, so take a day or two to enjoy it. Pretty amazing performance by the Blue Devils.

And if you wonder why it was so bad…over at the South Bend Tribune, Tom Noie has a pretty plausible explanation.
