Robbery Turned Deadly on Freedom Day
According to the Kouga News, the court heard that on 27 April 2022 – Freedom Day – Umslana and his accomplice travelled from Loerie to Jeffreys Bay armed with a .38 calibre revolver, intending to commit robbery.
Earlier that day, Gouws had withdrawn money, paid her domestic worker and was returning home after dropping her off.
The two men flagged her down and asked for a lift and food. In an act of kindness, she allowed them onto the back of her bakkie and bought them food at a local outlet.
Near the corner of Da Gama Street and the R102, the men confronted her. Umslana produced the firearm and shot her in the head, killing her.
They robbed her of her vehicle keys and a bag containing her driver’s licence, identity document, bank card, cellphone and other personal belongings valued at about R115 000.
The pair fled the scene, later returning to attempt to use her bank card. The firearm was subsequently disposed of.
Umslana was arrested on 4 May 2022.
Guilty Plea and Effective Sentence
In his plea, Umslana admitted that he intentionally shot and killed Gouws and acknowledged that his conduct was unlawful.
He also expressed remorse for the pain caused to her family.
In addition to the 25-year sentence for murder, the court imposed:
- 15 years’ imprisonment for robbery with aggravating circumstances
- 8 years for unlawful possession of a firearm
- 2 years for unlawful possession of ammunition
All additional sentences will run concurrently with the 25-year murder sentence, resulting in an effective sentence of 25 years’ imprisonment.
NPA Welcomes Outcome
Eastern Cape Director of Public Prosecutions Barry Madolo praised prosecutor Advocate Marius Stander and the investigating team for their work in securing the conviction.
He said the sentence sends a strong message that violent crimes, particularly murder and aggravated robbery, will attract severe consequences.
The case against Umslana’s co-accused, Donovan Chadon Rossouw (21), has been separated and is scheduled to begin on Wednesday, 24 February 2026.
